Primary Functions:
Design, maintain and monitor databases in accordance with industry best practices and College policies to ensure database integrity, efficiency, performance, and security.
Key Accountabilities:
Designs Databases:
In consultation with appropriate internal resources and aligned with industry “best practices” and CNO frameworks, create policies, procedures, guidelines and other documentation to ensure database integrity and maintain optimal performance.
Develop and document long-term strategic goals for production databases, in consultation with internal resources including data owners and appropriate organizational leaders.
In consultation with appropriate internal and external resources, participate in the design of database solutions to meet the business needs of teams and departments.
Maintains Databases:
Install and configure databases; research security patches and apply patches and hot fixes to database management systems.
Provide expertise to and consult with internal and external resources to efficiently identify and analyze database issues; research and recommend appropriate solutions including cost/benefit analysis; implement resolution; clearly document logic and actions for future reference.
Establish and implement schedules and other controls for database and database transaction log back-ups to minimize data loss and ensure database restoration in the event of a disaster.
Monitors Databases:
Establish performance standards for database performance; develop and implement processes to regularly monitor database usage and performance; strive to continuously improve on database responsiveness, accuracy, availability, reliability, security and performance; pro-actively identify and address issues degrading database performance; generate and maintain database performance and usage records.
Monitor all access to College SQL databases; identify and address any issues including non-compliance with policies.
Knowledge and Experience:
Combination of:
§ Relevant post secondary education (computer science, information systems, or computer engineering);
§ Recognized certification in a relational database management systems, preferably Microsoft SQL Server
§ Relevant continuing education courses, workshops and seminars demonstrating current knowledge of relational database design, systems analysis and design methodologies, physical and logical design, data modelling, and database security
And
§ Several years of related work experience, with an emphasis on database development and architecting, administration, tuning and management of transactional and analytical (data warehouse) databases.
§ Experience working collaboratively with a variety of roles in technical environments.

Strong organizational and time management skills; able to simultaneously manage several projects with competing deadlines with a focus on quality, accuracy and reliability.
Superb analytical skills with attention to detail; performs tasks meticulously with full understanding and consideration about the impact of errors; able to execute carefully with a thorough approach and to recover from adversity with no or negligible impact.
