if you get a bad cheque, it is not the end of world. if a cheque is returned as NSF (non-sufficient fund), you can still certify the returned item and get the money.
on the other hand, if you wrote a cheque and not cleared, and the payee wanted cash from you, make sure you get the original cheque back. because he/she can still get the money by certifying the cheque, or you can make a stop payment.
its hard and costly to charge someone. in your case, you may not even have a case. NSF is every common, unless you can prove the payer`s intent to fraud, which is almost impossilbe.
next time, either ask for a certified item or a draft.
