Selection Process
Your resume and covering letter will be reviewed by the Human Resources Advisor, who will contact you if we have positions that fit with your qualifications and experience. They may conduct an initial telephone interview and / or call you in for testing.
Depending on the position you're applying for, the testing may range from keyboarding speed to Microsoft Word and Excel to data entry skills. Some of our more specialized positions may require a written test.
If you successfully pass the testing, you will be called for an interview with the hiring manager and the Human Resources Advisor. The interviews are generally about one hour long and are based on behavioural, job-related questions to ascertain your knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job.
Short-listed candidates will need to undergo the Enhanced Security Clearance process. It consists of completing an authorization and a questionnaire, attending an interview with a VPD security officer and providing your fingerprints. The officer will complete your background check and will search police and other databases. All results are kept confidential. All Vancouver Police Department employees need to maintain their Enhanced Security Clearance as a condition of employment.
Most applicants selected for consideration will wait about six to eight weeks from the time they apply until they are hired.
