Earthquake of 5.5 Shakes Toronto Office Towers, Forces Ottawa Evacuations



A magnitude 5.5 earthquake in Canada shook office towers in Toronto and forced the evacuation of workers in Ottawa.
The earthquake at about 1:41 p.m. New York time was centered about 60 kilometers (37 miles) north of Ottawa, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The tremors were also felt as far away as Ohio, New York and Massachusetts, said Bruce Presgrave, a USGS geophysicist.
In Ottawa, several emergency vehicle sirens could be heard downtown, and hundreds of people evacuated buildings in the blocks around Parliament Hill. Mobile phone reception was intermittent in the half hour afterwards. There have been no reports of injuries.
“I was sitting at my desk when I felt a small shake,” said Kelly Cromwell, a money manager at J. Zechner Associates on the 47th floor of TD Canada Trust Tower at Brookfield Place building in Toronto’s financial hub. “My chair then started to move to the right, and that’s when I got up and ran to the elevator.”
When Andrea Ercolani felt the temblor in Toronto, she thought it was the vibrations from helicopters that had just flown low over downtown ahead of the Group of 20 summit this week.
“I was very nervous,” said Ercolani, 26, who works at a food magazine, Insight. “I’ve never felt an earthquake before.”

今天下午1点50分左右，多伦多市中心发生有感地震，在 Bloor 夹 Yonge St一座大厦上班的卡特（Alex Carter）表示，他感觉大楼在摇晃。

在渥太华，十几名在国会山（Parliament Hill）对面国家新闻大楼（National Press Building）上班的职员匆忙跑出办公室来到大街上，不少公务员逃离办公楼。据悉，地震持续了30秒左右，但目前有关部门尚未证实。

环球邮报的消息说，根据美国地质调查局（U.S. Geological Survey）发布的消息，地震震中在魁北克，即首都渥太华北面 61 公里处，发生时间为东部时间今天下午 1:41，测定震级为里氏5.5级。

5.5级为有感地震，足以将书架上的书籍抖落到地下。

联邦环境部长潘迪斯（Jim Prentice）说，地震发生时他正在世界交易广场（World Exchange Plaza）大楼的14层为 CTV电视台制作采访节目，他说突然感觉到椅子在移动（my chair was moving），随后还开玩笑说，所幸安然无恙。

很快在附近的人行道上挤满了从办公大楼涌下来的人群，渥太华市中心的手机通讯一度中断，可能是用手机发信息的人太多所致。

有人利用推特网（Twitter ）从美国发来信息，美国麻州（Mass）的 Springfield、密西根州的 Traverse City据报也感觉到地震。1名环球邮报的记者从满地可发来信息说，那里也有感觉
