According to the most recent American Community Survey by the Census Bureau, graduating architecture students have the highest unemployment rate among their peers: 13.9 percent, compared to 11.1 percent in the arts and 9.4 percent of those studying the humanities. The graph is available here. This is depressing news for CAD-lovers and design nerds everywhere, and The Washington Post reports that the debate over the value of a pricey college education is heating up.

The article quotes Anthony P. Carnevale, one of the authors of the study, as saying, "People keep telling kids to study what they love -- but some loves are worth more than others."

Parents: do you think your kids should study what they want or do you think they need to be more realistic about their aspirations? If the latter, how do you nudge your teen in the right direction? And what is to become of architecture and design if high school grads eschew the field for other, seemingly better, opportunities?

For architecture graduates who are still waiting for gainful employment, maybe the "Graduate Architects Unemployment Support Group" needs to be resurrected on Facebook. As Sherin Wing writes in Archinet: "A collective voice of both the unemployed and employed in architecture would prove powerful indeed."美国名校如伯克利毕业也找不到工作.

同时没有任何证据表明“可能是经济不景气的缘故.”

BTW，安省就业报告中说80%的建筑师属于自雇。2011年发布的就业展望是“尚好”，就业的平均年龄是46岁，年龄大于其他专业平均40岁的年龄结构。

获得建筑师的名称，需要认证（不是毕业就可以申请）。从拿到master之后，还需要至少5年（现在安省的规定是4年）。所以建筑师这个职业的就业状况，无法由应届毕业生的就业状况直接反应。

architect从2010年到2011年两年作为29项职业提名，如果是失业率最高的职业，那移民局应该反省。

另外，加拿大建筑开工量没有受到08年经济危机影响而出现大幅下滑，美国西部沿海城市住宅开工量正缓慢回升（NPR News）

根据 Labour market information by HRSDC 2012年2月份的报告

Construction
Construction of the West Don Lands redevelopment project, led by Dundee Kilmer Developments, started in Toronto in January. The site will become the Athletes’ Village during the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games. The project is expected to cost $514M and will create and support 5,200 jobs, including approximately 700 construction jobs. Once the Games are finished, the area will be redesigned into a development of condominiums, affordable housing units, a YMCA recreation centre and a student residence for George Brown College. (Waterfront Toronto, January 12)
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation announced 39,745 housing starts in the Toronto Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) in 2011, an increase of 36% compared to 2010. Meanwhile, there were 1,859 housing starts in the Oshawa CMA in 2011, a decrease of 1.5% compared to 2010. (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, January 2012)
New home sales totalled 45,926 in the Greater Toronto Area in 2011, an increase of 23% compared to 2010. (Building Industry and Land Development Association, January 20)


Real estate and rental and leasing
In the Toronto area, existing home sales totalled 89,347 in 2011, an increase of 4% compared to 2010.

跟楼主一样，来自国内的建筑设计行业，只不过我做的是建筑电气，也有注册证。
貌似建筑电气的前景不如建筑和结构好。

我也是一名从业十年的建筑师，正在办理移民过程中，我也希望早点做加拿大建筑师注册的准备。这个帖子非常有用，多谢！
我想一辈子做个建筑师，踏踏实实做设计，这十余年来国内设计行业的发展给很多人造成误解，追求的成功远在设计之外。其实去了加拿大也不能叫从零开始，毕竟这么多年的学习和职业经验不会是白积累的。

二是作品集和简历
三是语言准备

独自一个人在多伦多的日子比我想象的要慢，距离送老婆小孩快有2周半了，上OSLT课程也有1周半。

谈谈这里的体会：
1) 这里的professional 要求专业，专业，再专业。国内的建筑师大多数手里项目一堆，尤其像我这种做方案居多的人，谈起来过去八年做了各种项目，但是没有什么项目特别精。
在北美，没有人可以在多个领域都很强，这个是他们的常识。在国内，则特别希望员工啥都行，这样可以通吃（反正国内做项目连蒙带骗，忽悠为主大家也都心知肚明）。北美有句话：Jack of all trades, master of none.这里的雇主希望的是你知识的深度，经验的深度，而不是广度。 比如他们招一个condo设计师，那么你别墅设计了一大堆，办公设计了一大堆，对他而言，condo设计就是0. 你认为经验可以transfer? 很不幸，那是你这么认为……如果你每年做10个项目，还把这些码在简历上，以为自己涉猎全面，经验丰富。那很好，就和我一样傻。不会有回应。

2）这里的雇主只想招一个符合他要求的人，而不是高于这个要求，同时也不需要极具潜力的人。比如他要招一个绘图员，ok，你说我是项目负责人，经验刚刚的，屈才给你当个绘图员，你赚了……对不起，over qualified。
这的雇主基本上不会愿意培养自己的弟子，而不指望过多的培训。假如你说自己勤奋好学，在国内规范很熟，这里的规范只需些时日，也能融汇贯通……抱歉，你先把这里的building code学好再来。拿一个building code 补习班的certificate，好过超强的学习能力一万倍。

分享一下被打击的情况：参加了一个年轻建筑师的party。这里的native speaker语速快到你插不上半句话。他们硕士毕业，往往1年上下才进入intern architect的领域。一个工作十年，刚刚考完注册的建筑师，正在一家小公司完成一栋house的设计。一个开业4年的注册建筑师，主要做一些室内的项目。

当然，也有一些假如拥有，战无不胜的资历.1)精通revit，2）leed AP，3）精通安省building code，或者National building code。注意都是精通级别，那么申请入门级的设计师，可能interview不断。 请注意，国内建筑师工作的领域，基本上和这里的绘图员工作的领域重合。

嗦了半天，哥们我，还得更加optimistic一些：）
