Dear Xxx,
Thank you for writing to MP Terry Beech regarding Motion M-103 and Islamophobia in Canada. He wanted to make sure that we followed-up with you to address this important issue and correct some of the misinformation being spread about M-103.
Racism and religious discrimination, including Islamophobia, have no place in Canadian society. On December 1st, MP Iqra Khalid tabled M-103 to condemn all forms of systemic racism and religious discrimination, including Islamophobia.
It’s important to make clear what M-103 does and does not do, as M-103 is a motion that is not only about Islamophobia but seeks to address all forms of systemic racism and religious discrimination. M-103 seeks to accomplish two things:
1. Call upon the House of Commons to condemn all forms of systemic racism and religious discrimination, including but not limited to Islamophobia.
2. Instruct the House Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage to study how the government could (a) reduce or eliminate systemic racism and religious discrimination, and (b) collect data to contextualize hate crime reporting and to conduct needs assessments for impacted communities.
M-103 is a non-binding motion, not a bill or law. It does not change the Criminal Code, nor does it affect freedom of speech in Canada.
Regarding the inclusion of the term “Islamophobia”, M-103 is not only about Islamophobia but seeks to address all forms of systemic racism and religious discrimination. Naming Islamophobia is important as it is a rising form of hate crime – police-reported hate crimes against Muslims have doubled since 2012, while hate crimes overall have been declining in Canada.
This motion is about finding peaceful ways to live together in a multicultural secular society. It deals with how racism and religious discrimination of all forms affect our society, and helps us focus on how to ensure that Canada remains a place where people from all backgrounds and faiths are welcomed and feel that they are part of our national fabric.
Once again, thank you for writing to Mr. Beech on the subject of M-103 and Islamophobia. Please do not hesitate to write again, on this subject or any other.
Best regards,
