The party ended badly for a number of revellers celebrating Dalhousie University’s homecoming weekend in Halifax's south end Saturday.

The worst could be yet to come.

“It would be premature to speculate on what those possible outcomes would be,” Brian Leadbetter, Dal’s director of communications, said Sunday about potential university penalties against students who took part in loud off-campus street and residential parties Saturday morning and early afternoon.

“We have a number of measures that could be implemented in relation to our student code of conduct,” Leadbetter said. “At this stage, we are gathering information about what transpired yesterday, working collaboratively with police on their next steps. We will be working through the university’s response for the remainder of this week.”

Leadbetter would not say if students could be suspended or dismissed for their actions.

Nearly two dozen students were arrested Saturday by Halifax Regional as crowds estimated at 1,000 or more spilled out of house parties held on Jennings, Preston, Chestnut and Larch streets. The arrests covered offences of public intoxication, disturbing the peace and bylaw violations.

Leadbetter said the bigger issue is the disrespect the partiers showed for the community.

“First and foremost, we’d again wish to apologize to the residents in our surrounding communities for what did transpire yesterday,” he said. “A large group of students impacted their community in an incredibly negative way and for that we are truly, truly sorry. We have been a community university in excess of 200 years and we’ve always committed to being a good neighbour and that’s certainly the expectations that we have of our students.”

Leadbetter said the behaviour by large crowds of students that he estimated to be in excess of 700 partiers was unacceptable.

“We fully appreciate and understand the wish to celebrate homecoming. The vast majority of homecoming events were done without incident whether it be the hockey game, the football game or other faculty events.

“They (partiers) certainly did not represent the university well and they did not represent themselves well.”

The university strives to be community-oriented, he said.

“We appreciate that we are a large university within the peninsula of Halifax. We have joined residential communities. We take that commitment very seriously.

. . . The police patrols that we find at the university in September, October and November to make sure that our students are aware of expectations. The university spends a lot of time educating these individuals on what it means to be a good neighbour, how to engage as active citizens.”

But large groups of students simply chose to disregard “those very clear guidelines,” he said.

Leadbetter said the residential neighbourhood is not designed to be a congregating area for hundreds of students.

“I was at the site throughout the day. Everything from litter to broken bottles to other things within the area, it creates an unsafe environment and ultimately we are committed to ensuring that both our community members and the broader Dalhousie community members, including staff and alumni, are safe within the community. Our perspective is that this was not a safe venue, this was not a safe environment.”

Leadbetter said the university is reviewing videos from the event.

“Yes, students may be subject to university discipline. We’re still working through what that could potentially look like. But that is certainly is a possible repercussion for those who we identify to be actively engaged as part of this.”
