最近读了一本关于移民家庭亲子关系的书《The Rice Room》，作者是生于美国的华裔二代方振豪，其父母是从中国移民到美国的第一代移民。书中描述的绝大部分家庭问题与语言有关。

方振豪很难将中国文化和美国文化融合在一起。他没有必需的中文词汇量，因为他只懂得他儿时学的一些基础中文词汇。作为一名成功的说英文的主播和记者，方振豪其实无法真正地与将英语仅视为工作语言的父母沟通。

“当我们谈话的时候，听起来就像是婴儿的牙牙学语——至少我说的中文是这样……中文基础词汇中的大概有一大半我都不懂；我也从来没有学过这些词，或者我学过但已经忘记了。”语言障碍将方振豪和他的父母隔离开来“……我无数次地尝试和父母谈一些亲子间经常谈起的话题：职业、婚姻、医疗健康和历史。但这些沟通也同时成为我人生中最悲哀的时刻……我是一名记者和主播——我的工作就是沟通——但是我却无法和我人生中最重要的的两个人交流。”

无论对于一代移民还是二代移民，这个问题都无法回避。

在蒙特利尔的中文学校教室外，我们经常能看到等待孩子的父母们。教室里的孩子们在学习英法语的同时还要努力学习中文，但是教室外的相当一部分的父母却从来没打算去提高外语水平。他们在等待，等待着今天下课后和自己一起回家的孩子，也是等待着年老时，能将医生护士口中的外文医疗术语流利地翻译成中文的和自己一起去医院的孩子。

我们不禁要扪心自问的是，是不是让孩子们去学习中文，作为父母的我们就不必主动去学习外语了？

人都有惰性，孩子也一样，所以需要父母督促。长大后，惰性不会变，但没有父母督促了。家长让孩子学中文，是帮助孩子的未来，这是一种无私高尚的行为。
