Hanford Technical Library

The Hanford Technical Library at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
(PNNL) is seeking a full-time Systems Librarian with expertise in the Horizon
integrated library system. The Library serves 3,500 PNNL employees with more
than one thousand on-going research projects each year in fields including
proteomics, environmental microbiology, medicine, nanotechnology, advanced
materials, manufacturing, high-performance computing, transportation, energy,
and national security. During 2000, PNNL staff received 32 domestic patents. The
library also serves the Hanford Site with a workforce of approximately 11,000
and is a community resource for the Tri-Cities (Kennewick, Pasco, Richland). The
library is co-located with the Washington State University at Tri-Cities' Max E.
Benitz Memorial Library on the WSU-TC campus.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Three-to-five years experience in integrated library
system support, preferably Horizon; significant experience with project
management and analysis, working collaboratively with colleagues, researchers,
engineers, and administrators; demonstrated experience with innovation, working
independently and as a team; experience with information technologies such as
database technologies, OCR/digital imaging standards and practices, scripting
languages (Perl, ASP, and Cold Fusion), XML/XHMTL, instructional technology,
system administration, and web site development and publishing is desired.
SKILL REQUIREMENTS: Working knowledge of Windows operating systems and Windows
2000 and NT networks, Horizon system, OCLC, AACR2, metadata standards, record
formats and contents (cataloging...MARC, SUM, Dublin Core, etc.), classification
systems (Library of Congress), web server administration, SQL and SQL Server,
and state-of-the-art library, information, and communications technologies,
including Z39.50, DOI, and other standards. Strong understanding of relational
databases and tables; demonstrated ability to develop and manage own workload
and to work effectively in a high-paced environment; high-level of computer
literacy with databases, programming, networks and servers; strong
troubleshooting and root cause identification skills; ability to train others to
use computer systems and software; strong problem-solving skills; strong
written, oral, and presentation skills; excellent interpersonal and
communications skills; demonstrated ability to think globally and provide advice
at the strategic level.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Masters in Library Science, Library & Information
Science, or equivalent education and/or working experience is required.
Minimum monthly salary: $3,800.00. Maximum monthly salary: $5,700.
This position reports to the Assistant Director for Electronic and Technical
Services. The staff at the Hanford Technical Library includes 13 exempt and 11
non-exempt staff.
The collection includes 1100+ current journals, 800,000 technical reports, 1000
standards, 25,000 monographs, and desktop access to more than 700 electronic
journals. The Hanford Technical Library has a Legal Library branch located in
the Federal Building in downtown Richland. PNNL also operates the DOE Public
Reading Room, housed with the Hanford Technical Library.
