Burnaby Mountain, elev. 370m (1214'), is a low, forested mountain in the city of Burnaby, British Columbia, overlooking the upper arms of Burrard Inlet. It is the location of Simon Fraser University, the Discovery Park research community, and the System Control Tower of BC Hydro and a new complex of residential and commercial development under the aegis of SFU, promoted as UniverCity. In November 1995, the Province of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University reached an agreement to transfer 820 acres (3.3 km2) of university land to the City of Burnaby for inclusion into Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area [1].
Wildlife
In spite of residential development on its western slope and continuing deforestation due to condominium construction around SFU, the mountain still has some wildlife remaining such as deer, coyotes customarily roaming local streets, and even a few black bears, sometimes mothers with cubs, who pay occasional visits to the backyards of Westridge residents.[2] Common wild birds include several types of woodpeckers, northern flickers, Steller's jays, and Great Blue Herons.
Attractions
Burnaby Mountain has a spectacular viewpoint facing west at Centennial Park. The yearly Celebration of Light fireworks festival on English Bay west of downtown Vancouver can be seen from the park and attracts a large audience on the parks' westward-facing lawns. Along with the outdoor view, Horizons Restaurant lets customers dine while watching the view of Vancouver to the west, or up mountainous Indian Arm to the north.
Burnaby Mountain is known for its mountain biking trails and obstacles.
The park is also home to a collection of Ainu totem pole-like carvings which commemorate the goodwill between Burnaby and its sister city, Kushiro, Japan,[1] as well as a fairly large formal rose garden[3]

One of the natural amenities which makes our city among the most liveable in the world is public access to the waterfront. Almost 18 km (11 mi) of beaches surround Vancouver. Enjoying waterfront access can take many guises: observing the beautiful landscape while cycling, walking or driving by; playing in the sand, swimming, windsurfing, sailing or merely sitting. We have special areas that have been cordoned-off for swimming, ensuring maximum lifeguard coverage. Lifeguards are on duty from Victoria Day until Labour Day from 11:30 am to 9:00 pm (except when red light is on).
Enjoy our designated "quiet beaches" (Locarno, Spanish Bank West and Sunset Beach), where amplified music is prohibited.

The green hillside offers room to throw a frisbee or send a kite soaring. A network of trails offers a variety of hiking, walking and jogging options, and there is a playground tucked into the upper hillside.
The Centennial Pavilion area features the resplendent Rose Garden, with its vibrant colours, heady scents and great variety of roses. Nearby are the acclaimed Horizons restaurant and two majestic totem poles, a reminder of the community's proud native heritage.
Towering over the distant city are the tall Kamui Mintara (Playground of the Gods) sculptures. The Kamui Mintara is more than a dozen carved poles created by Japanese sculptors Nuburi Toko and his son, Shusei. These impressive sculptures commemorate the goodwill between Burnaby and its sister city, Kushiro, Japan.
In November 1995, the Province of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University reached an agreement to transfer 820 acres of university land to the City of Burnaby for inclusion into Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area.
The majority of this 1,423 acre park is comprised of steep, forested mountain slopes. The conservation of such a large natural area, in one of North America's fastest growing metropolitan regions, will ensure the accessibility and preservation of a valuable natural heritage. Burnaby Mountain has many significant ecological assets, including a mixed deciduous/coniferous forest, diverse wildlifesuch as blacktail deer, bald eagles and many perching birdsand creeks that provide critical habitats for fish and wildlife. The park area, with its many trails, provides untold opportunities for outdoor recreation, nature interpretation and education in Burnaby.
