Provincial court judges in Saskatchewan are getting a total pay hike of nearly 17 per cent over the next three years, the government said Friday.
Judges will get an extra eight per cent tacked on to their salaries starting in April, bringing the position's base salary to just less than $221,000 a year.
Their pay will rise by another four per cent in each of the following two years, bringing the base salary up to roughly $240,000.
The raises will affect 48 judges.
The Supreme Court of Canada ruled a few years ago that salaries and benefits for judges must be set by an independent commission. The province's ability to reject the commission's recommendations is strictly limited.
Still, the office of the Minister of Justice and Attorney General issued a release Friday, stating the pay increases bring salaries for Saskatchewan judges in line with other jurisdictions.
"We believe that these recommendations are fair and reasonable," said Minister of Justice and Attorney General Don Morgan.
