A B.C. Supreme Court judge has twice ruled the province violated teachers’ charter rights when it passed legislation in 2002 that removed hundreds of clauses related to class size and class composition from their collective agreement and prohibited those issues from being bargained in the future. The rulings retroactively restored the deleted clauses

$6,000-plus, and counting
As of last week, the average lost wages among public school teachers topped $6,000. The B.C. Teachers’ Federation has been unable to help them because its strike fund is empty.
The loss of income also hurts restaurants and retailers, as tens of thousands of teachers are left with little disposable income for non-essential items or outings.

I'mnot too impressed. Please do not keep your students at bait or use them as hostage. They are innocent. They are future sources of your pension funds. They are your future. If you leave the students alone and let them go back to school. I'll put all my hands and feet to support you.

Throwing around terms such as "hostage" completely disrespects those who have actually undergone such unfortunate circumstances. BC students deserve proper funding. If you want change communicate that to your MLA.

I don't think I'm throwing around terms. What I'm stating is a fact. No matter to the government or BCTF, students are used as hostage. It's really pathetic to see this happen. Why we are so in lack of a visionary, strategically-minded leadership? Education is nothing like utilities or public transportation. Sacrificing students is sacrificing our own future.

the BCTF needs to stand firmly against e80 to ensure the future of public education in BC, not only for their current students but also for the ones not even born yet. Stay strong teachers and yay to the other unions standing in support

@Jeff Zhou....this Government has abused its power....the B.C. Liberals are to blame for this impasse....the Courts have ruled x2 against this government....this government INTENDED to discredit the B.C. Teachers....it is following the Playbook of USA Libertarian agenda of defunding public education to the point of intolerable & unworkable conditions for the students as well as the Teachers, who are trying to be the professionals educators they should be.....the agenda is for the public to become disenchanted & consider private education......This has been shown to have very poor outcomes.... corrupt education entrepeneurs, who skim the top for bonuses & big profits at the expense of Teachers & students alike.

@Jeff Zhou....rest assured, in this country, democratic right to association & fair labour standards must be supported....your child too, will benefit...and so will you, as you age, & require professional medical care by certified professional health teams....

Veronika, the way to fight against any attempt to discredit public education is not to put students in the system out of school. Such a strategy only gives people more excuse to shun from public education. If we pay taxes to support public education and the system wastes our children's precious time, why shouldn't we stop paying that part of our taxes?! Find a better way to fight for yourselves as well as for your students whom you'll depend for a future.
