2006年度最好的四门轿车(Best Sedans 2006)

1.BMW

Best Performance Sedan: BMW M5

Base Price: $81,200

How shocking is BMW's use of a 500-hp V-10 engine in its M5 sedan? Put it this way: Dodge's Viper two-door, one of the most extreme performance cars, uses a 500-hp V-10. Formula 1 cars use V-10s. But this is a BMW. The V-10 here comes with a first-rate luxury cockpit and some of the most engaging driving dynamics and technology on any vehicle, including sports cars.

2.Bentley

Best Ultra-luxury Sedan: Bentley Arnage, Maybach 62 and Rolls-Royce Phantom (tie)

Base Price: $220,985 (Arnage); $385,250 (62); $332,750 (Phantom)

Once again, we are unwilling and unable to narrow the ultra-luxury sedan honorees down to one winner. The flagship models from Bentley, Maybach and Rolls-Royce all represent the height of automotive opulence, and all are appointed with the finest luxury features. The Arnage is a limousine that can outgun most sports cars. The Maybach has rear seats that are as accommodating as international business-class seats. The Rolls (pictured above) is, well, a Rolls.

3.Bentley

Best Celebrity Magnet: Bentley Continental Flying Spur

Base Price: $171,285

Such celebrities as Paris Hilton have been seen driving Bentley's Continental coupe, and the British automaker recently began offering a sedan companion, the Continental Flying Spur. Not only is the Flying Spur gorgeous inside and out, it is also one of the fastest and most desirable performance cars on the market, thanks largely to its 12-cylinder engine, which has twin turbochargers and more than 550 hp.

4.BMW

Best Premium Sedan: BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class (tie). Honorable Mention: Audi A8.

Base Price: $71,800 (7 Series); $86,175 (S-Class)

In the past, we have mainly honored the Audi A8 for its great interior. But Mercedes' new S-Class flagship (pictured above) trumps even Audi's masterpiece, thanks to gorgeous features, such as ambient “waterfall” lighting that surrounds the cabin, and ultra-luxury touches, including seats that can give multiple types of massages. Our other honoree, the 7 Series, has always been a more engaging driver than the A8, with superior ride and handling, and it also has a near-perfect interior.

5.BMW

Best Entry-Level Luxury Sedan: BMW 3 Series

Base Price: $30,900

Several great, overhauled, entry-level luxury sedans have arrived, including new versions of BMW's 3 Series, Audi's A4 and Lexus' IS. The Audi has gone from being handsome and popular to being almost perfect, but it still suffers from over-assisted brakes and inferior steering feedback to that of BMW's 3 Series--the car which, after its overhaul, is still the standard-setter for interior luxury, engaging driving dynamics and overall desirability.

6.Chrysler

Best Dose of Detroit Attitude: Chrysler 300C SRT8 and Dodge Charger SRT8. Honorable mention: Cadillac DTS.

Base Price: $42,695 (300C SRT8); $38,095 (Charger SRT8)

These are two old-school, mean-looking Detroit sedans, each with wicked performance chops. Both the 300C SRT8 (pictured above) and Charger SRT8 use 6.1-liter, 425-hp Hemi V-8 engines, and both are reasons to be optimistic about Detroit's future.

7.Volkswagen

Best-Kept Secret: Volkswagen Passat 3.6

Base Price: $29,950

Volkswagen's new Passat 3.6 sedan--the fancy Passat trim level--has a luxury-car interior, complete with plenty of wood trim and gorgeous, jewelry-like gauges on the instrument panel. It is quick and sexy, but innocuous-looking. The styling--designed to be more Japanese-bland than that of the previous Passat--masks an interior that we certainly weren't expecting.

8.Infiniti

Best Makeover: Infiniti M and Lexus GS (tie)

Base Price: $40,840 (M); $43,845 (GS)

Note that this category is not “Best Overhaul.” We mean “makeover,” as in “change of identity.” The mid-range Infiniti and Lexus (shown above) sedans have gone from being nonentities to having hip, sexy, inviting interiors, as well as sportier and more youthful exteriors. Both cars now have more power and more exciting driving dynamics, which brings them more in line with competition from Germany.

9.Maserati

Best-Looking Sedan: Maserati Quattroporte

Base Price: $103,700

In a category with too many “honorable mentions” to list here, Maserati's Quattroporte stands out. The market has plenty of handsome luxury sedans, but the Quattroporte is as sexy as any sports car--make that any car--on the market, and it proves that sedans need not be mere compromises bought for passenger and cargo utility. The Quattroporte has a design by Italian design house and longtime Ferrari partner Pininfarina.

10.Toyota

Best Bargain Luxury Car: Toyota Avalon

Base Price: $26,775

Toyota's Avalon is every bit as nice as most Lexus vehicles--and can fly too, thanks to a 268-hp motor. That's 53 more horses than you would get in an entry-level BMW 3 Series, but the Avalon is far more humble. In fact, its styling is designed to blend in, not stand out. We think that's hot; we love surprising Audis and Jaguars with Avalons that we borrow for evaluation.
