BRIDGEWATER, N.S.?Dozens of angry Bridgewater residents crowded outside the town's courthouse yesterday shouting accusations and expletives as police escorted Penny Boudreau into a waiting cruiser.
"Murderer! Killer!" echoed through the community's streets.
"You deserve what you did to your daughter," one woman yelled while Boudreau covered her face and hurried from the courthouse to the car.
About 100 people packed the provincial courtroom as the 33-year-old made her first appearance on charges of first-degree murder in the death of her daughter Karissa Boudreau, 12.
She wept uncontrollably throughout the brief appearance, covering her tear-stained face with her hands and crumpled tissues.
Boudreau had reported her daughter missing Jan. 27, telling police the last time she saw Karissa was in a grocery store parking lot in Bridgewater, about an hour southwest of Halifax.
Boudreau said she had left the girl in the car while she ran inside to pick up groceries after the pair had quarrelled.
During a massive ensuing search, Boudreau tearfully pleaded for her daughter's return: "I just want you to come home," she said. "We all love you Karissa."
Karissa's frozen body was discovered Feb. 9 on the banks of the LaHave River by a passerby. Police later confirmed she had been killed.
Boudreau was arrested last Friday.
During the court appearance, her ex-husband Shane Boudreau, Karissa's father Paul Boudreau and the 12-year-old's grandparents, Wayne and Suzanne Grear, sat front and centre, holding each other's hands.
Judge Anne Crawford read the charge to Boudreau but she didn't answer it because her lawyer was not present in court.
The judge told Boudreau she will be remanded to a correctional centre until a June 24 court date. Crawford also said she was directing the correctional centre that Boudreau is to have no contact with named Crown witnesses.
They include: Boudreau's ex-husband; Karissa's father; an aunt of the girl and Boudreau's boyfriend.
After the five-minute court appearance, Crown prosecutor Paul Scovil said "considerable evidence" gives the prosecution a "high degree of confidence."
