MLIS Admission Requirements
Admission Requirements
As space is limited, it is strongly suggested that application to the MLIS program at GSLIS be made as early as possible.
There are four requirements in order to be admitted to the Master of Library and Information Studies degree:
Applicants must have a bachelor's degree from a recognized university. Academic standing of at least a B, or second class, upper division, or
CPGA of 3.0 out of 4.0 is normally required.
The School will take into account the character of the applicants' undergraduate studies and their suitability for a career in library and information services.
Courses in library and/or information studies taken before or as part of a B.A., or such courses taken in a school with a program not accredited by the American Library Association, cannot be accepted either as fulfilling the entrance requirement or as credit toward the McGill MLIS.
Applicants with a Bachelor's degree completed solely or primarily in a language other than English or French are required to submit documented proof of competency in oral and written English prior to admission.
Such proof normally comprises the Test of English as a Foreign Language
(TOEFL) with a minimum score of 600 (paper-based test) or
250 (computer-based test), with a
written score of at least 5.0 for either test,
100 (IBT Internet based TOEFL) with a written score of at least 25 and a reading, speaking, and listening score of not less than 20, or the International English Language testing System (IELTS) with a minimum overall band score of 7.5
Applicants whose mother tongue is not English may be asked to demonstrate an English-language competency beyond the submission of the TOEFL or IELTS scores.就是说会有电话面试.
Competency in the use of computers is expected. GSLIS uses Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP based operating systems on a Novell network. It is essential that students be familiar with file management and the Microsoft Office 2003 suite, especially Word 2003, PowerPoint 2003, Excel 2003 and Access 2003. It is also desirable that students be familiar with computer programming and statistics.
Previous library experience, while not essential, will be given consideration in assessing an application but cannot replace academic requirements.

In certain circumstances, the deposit may be paid by certified cheque or money order through special arrangements with the GSLIS office.
