结果孩子回去就和妈妈说,你帮我,you pretend you want to hurt me, 然后这孩子就练习ignore。

Topic:
Environmental problems are too big for individual countries or persons to solve. They should be solved by international efforts, To what extent do you agree?

Essay:
Worldwide environmental deterioration has become one of the most challenging problems of the contemporary world. But in the meantime, whether international cooperation should be pursuit to protect the environment has sparked much debate. Some people assert that environmental problems are too big for individual countries to solve. Personally, I fundamentally agree with them, for two reasons, as follows:

Firstly, in many cases, the effect of environmental disasters may cover several countries. For example, the sand storm originated in Mongolia or Inner Mongolia province of China have caused people in Beijing, Seoul, and even Tokyo to suffer frigid winter days for the past several years. This situation has raised awareness among people in Korea and Japan about the deteriorating ecosystem thousands of miles away from their country. Fortunately, people from these countries are beginning to work together to fight the deserting in China and Mongolia.

Secondly, some severe environmental problems such as greenhouse effect and natural resources depletion are the effect of centuries of industrialization, which has only benefited few developed countries. Furthermore, the developing countries might not have enough funds to solve the environmental problems. In many cases, the local government has to invest the limited budget to fulfill the target of “survival” instead of curbing the pollution. It is therefore the responsibility for those benefited nations to actively participate in global environment protection activities, especially give financial support to the developing countries. We are glad to see some effective mechanisms has been established as a joint effort of the world. One good example is The Tokyo CDM Agreement, according to which many CDM projects have been established in China with investment from the Western countries.

To sum up, I am convinced that countries on this planet must make a concerted effort to combat environmental problems.

It's an excellent essay for IELTS' Writing; its score should be about 8, I think.

Today people in different countries can see the same movie, TV shows and use the same websites. To what extent you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Essay:
Today people in different countries can see the same movie, TV shows and use the same websites. Meanwhile, whether this cultural globalization is a blessing or curse has sparked spirited debate. Some people assert that it has fundamentally beneficial influence on our lives while others argue that it has detrimental effect as well. Personally, I am in favor of the former view.

Convincing arguments can be made that cultural globalization brings numerous benefits to our lives. To start with, it helps us to communicate with people from all over the world more smoothly. As illustrated by the book “The World Is Flat”, China has become the world’s factory and India has become the world’s office, which requires that people from different countries to understand each other, and to communicate well with each other. Movies and TV shows serve to be one of the most efficient ways of value-sharing. It is very easy for one from Chinese to find a common topic with one from the United States, if both of them like to watch “Desperate Housewives”. Moreover, this integration of global market provides the really good movies with the opportunity to amuse more people and thus become much more profitable. With more financial support from the earnings, the production team can contribute more to the media art by more excellent works in the future.

Admittedly, cultural globalization may carry potential drawbacks. Some people worry about the loss of traditional cultures since youngsters now tend to watch Hollywood films rather than domestic movies and other local dramas. Even so, it is worth noting that cultural globalization provides traditional cultures with a broader stage, so that they can be known and understood by people from all over the world. For instance, Chinese movie industry has been booming as a result of its active participation in cultural globalization.

In summary, I would concede that cultural globalization is not without its adverse effects. Despite that, the benefits created by it far outweigh the disadvantages. Overall, I am convinced that we should further promote the development of cultural globalization.

Some people think tourists should follow the behavior and customs of the local people, to what extent do you agree?

Essay:
In present day society, tourism has become an integrated part of the contemporary lifestyle. But at the same time, controversy has arisen about whether or not tourists should follow the behavior and customs of the local people. As a person who travelled a lot both domestically and internationally, I partially agree with them, with certain doubts.

A certain degree of tourists’ conformity to the local customs and behavior is necessary. For one thing, this helps tourists to avoid many inconveniences and conflicts during their trips. For example, Chinese tourists would avoid the embarrassment of irritating their servers if they are well-informed about and follow the custom of tipping in an American restaurant. Likewise, Western travelers may avoid behaviors which could upset the local residents in Thailand, such as tapping children’s head. For another, efforts to adopt the local customs and behavior enable foreign tourists to better understand and appreciate the local cultural heritage such as rituals, folklore and handicrafts.

However, a total conformity may carry potential drawbacks. Firstly, it is obvious that cultural difference between tourists and local inhabitants should be preserved to some extent. Tourism is a symbol of human desire for variety and for exploration, which enables them to get firsthand multi-sensory experience with an exotic culture differing from their own. Secondly, in many cases, it is impractical for tourists to adopt local customs and behavior. For instance, people visiting northern Canada may find it extremely difficult to follow the local Inuit’s habit of eating raw seal flesh.

In conclusion, I am convinced that it is only a matter of degree whether or not local customs should be followed by visitors. It’s for the travelers themselves to decide to what extent according to the scenario.

Some people think government should invest in public facilities instead of art. To what extent do you agree?

Essay:
Nowadays, whether government should invest in public facilities instead of art has sparked much debate. Some people assert that government should not spend a lot of money on artistic and cultural projects, while others argue that it may cause detrimental effects on our lives. Personally, I think they are overly simplistic.

It is obvious that people need not only material lives but also spiritual entertainment. Therefore it is the government’s responsibility to consider both economical and cultural issues while allocating its budget. It is my opinion that the services provided by the government should meet the current situation of the society.

For one thing, we have to admit that it is impractical to enjoy cultural and leisure pursuits if one’s physical needs are not satisfied. For a developing country, priority of investment should with no doubt be given to public facilities which directly link to economic development. Let’s take China for example: huge amount of investment from foreign countries has been attracted to this country due to improved infrastructure, which accounts for a large contributing factor of its two-digit annual growth rate. Every penny the government spends in transportation system, water and power supply, and telecommunication facilities is worthwhile.

However, we should never forget that people does not live only by bread. With the improvement of people’s living standard, their spiritual demands become more considerable. It is therefore necessary to gradually raise the percentage of art investment in government’s budget as the economy develops. Furthermore, well designed and constructed art works add to the beauty of the city, so that boost the local tourism industry. A case in point is the Opera House in Sydney, which has attracted millions of people to visit this Australian city ever since its establishment.

In conclusion, I am convinced that this issue is only a matter of degree whether the government should invest in public facilities or art. It is for the government to decide how to allocate their budget according to the development circumstances of its country.

Scientists contribute more to the development of our society. But many people ignore basic science today. What are the causes and what are your solutions?

Essay:
Recognized as driving force behind productivity, basic science plays an important role in human society progress. However, the problem that many people ignore basic science today has drawn widespread attention. In this essay, I will analyze some possible causes of this phenomenon and then propose some solutions.

It is obvious that the reason for today’s negligence of basic science is diverse. Firstly, unlike applied science, basic scientific subjects such as mathematics, physics and chemistry concentrate on the development of fundamental theories as opposed to the design of specific products for practical use. In most cases, it may take as long as several decades for a raw theory to make a real profit. This situation has prevented commercial enterprises and individual investors from supporting basic science financially. Secondly, the media industry of the present day covers so little about basic science and talented scientists. As a result, today’s children are dreaming to be movie stars, successful businessman, or politician, instead of to be a scientist.

Accordingly, the solutions to this problem should be varied as well. To start with, the government should raise the budget of investment in basic science and bring about effective mechanisms to attract private financial support. Then, the media should actively participate in this issue. That is to say, the contribution of scientist to society should be highlighted, and scientific achievements should be more actively publicized.

In sum, causes of ignorance of basic science are manifold. I am convinced that we should take effective measures, including government efforts and media publicity of scientists, to alleviate this problem.

Some people are optimistic about the 21st century. To what extent do you agree with their optimism?

Essay:
In this age of change, the human society is progressing rapidly on various fronts. Some people believe that we are facing a brighter future in the 21st century. While others argue that we have to solve so many serious problems before we can be confident in this optimism. Personally, I am in favor of the former view.

Admittedly, it is reasonable for those doubts, since we are facing so many serious obstacles which are seemingly impossible to conquer. Firstly, the ecological system of the planet has been so dramatically damaged, causing much more meteorological disasters then ever before. Secondly, the natural resources such as oil and gas, iron ore, fresh water is depleted so at an accelerating pace. Once these non-renewable resources are used up, we leave nothing for our offspring for survival.

Despite of the above mentioned worries, I am sure that human of the contemporary society are wise and responsible enough solve these problem and thus make our future brighter. First of all, the proliferation of internet has made the earth a flat world, people from different part of the world begin to communicate with and understand each other, and then cooperate with each other to solve the problems. Compared to the 20th century, which has suffered twice from the world war, it is undeniable that human will achieve more since peace and mutual understanding has been a worldwide awareness. In the second place, we can rely on the progress of human wisdom such as sustainable development mechanism, as well as technology to solve the problem of environmental deterioration and natural resources depletion. Let’s take the two oil crisis in the 1970s for example, as oil prices rose, people were motivated to find more new reservoir and substitute for oil. The prediction made around 1975 that oil would be used up by 1990 has been proved to be a big mistake.

In conclusion, despite the serious problems that we are facing, I am more than convinced that human of the contemporary society is wise and competent enough to conquer all the difficulties and create a bright 21st century.

The appearance of buildings is more important than their functions, to what extent do you agree?

Essay:
Nowadays, more and more new buildings have been constructed as a result of the inevitable trend of urbanization. At the meantime, whether the appearance of buildings is more important than their functions has sparked much debate. Some people think that priority should always be given to functions while others argue that ignorance of appearance may carry huge drawbacks. Personally, I think they are overly simplistic.

It is obvious that people need not only material lives but also spiritual entertainment, therefore both side should not be neglected. In most of the cases, the pursuit of appearance means same functions with additional investment. The difficulties start when we try to define what the proportion of the budget should be.

For one thing, we have to admit that it is not practical for people to enjoy cultural and leisure pursuits if one’s physical needs are not satisfied. For a developing country, which normally featured by large population to accommodate and limited budget, priority should undoubtedly be given to buildings’ functions so that housing problems could be solved as far as possible.

However, we should never ignore that people do not live only by breads. With the development of living standards, people’s spiritual demands become more considerable. Beautifully constructed buildings will serve to beautify the city and thus bring mental pleasure in the residents. Moreover, a building of good appearance may boost the local tourism industry, thus augments the economical development. A case in point is the Opera House in Sydney, which attracted millions of tourists to visit this Australian city ever since its establishment.

In conclusion, I am convinced that this issue is a matter of degree whether we should invest in appearance or functions, and that the two issues should be weighed by development stages of the country.

Memorization of information by frequent repetition (“rote learning”) plays an important role in the education system. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Essay:
For centuries, memorization of information by frequent repetition has been an effective and efficient way of learning. However, in this era of information, whether rote learning is still important in the education system has sparked much debate. Personally, I believe that this learning method cease to be as important as before in today’s society, for the following reasons.

Firstly, the talent of memorization is no longer an essential skill, as a result of the transformation of how knowledge is stored and transferred. In the past times, when books were rare in quantity and expensive in price, people with wide learning and retentive memory were highly respected. However, this encyclopedic skill become somewhat useless since every one can get all the information they want by google.

Secondly, too much focus put on the importance of rote learning may carry some drawbacks. For one thing, one probably shall not get the essence of knowledge without serious thinking or brainstorming, which cannot be replaced by rote learning. Memorizing without understanding has been proved to be a waste of time. Moreover, if priority is given to memorization, the cultivation of creativity may be hampered. Creativity has been widely accepted as the most important inner quality of contemporary human being. Let’s just think about how we are entertained by the most imaginary movies such as “Jurassic Park”, “E.T.”, etc., and how the productivity were augment by the invention of internet and computer.

In conclusion, I am convinced that memorization cease to be a must in this information era, and our education system should be modified to be more creativity-oriented.

Topic:
Some people believe that children are given too much free time. They feel that this time should be used to do more school work. How do you think children should spend their free time? Given reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Essay:
In today’s society, it is universally acknowledged that education plays an important role in individual’s development. Meanwhile, whether children should be given enough time for non-learning pursuits has sparked much debate. Some people believe that children are given too much free time and that this time should used to do more school work. Personally, I don’t agree with them.

It is obvious that schooling and knowledge-learning should not be the only part of education, and appropriate time allocation to non-learning pursuits does benefit students’ growth greatly. Firstly, extra-curricular activities such as sports, music, paintings help the students be become sound both physically and psychologically, so that they could be more prepared to lead a stressful life when they grow up. Secondly, to much force-feed of the pre-digested knowledge may hamper the cultivation of creativity. In the information age, when every detailed description of anything could be got by simply clicking the mouse, we cannot imagine that a dull, boring childhood will bring out a person of supreme creativity.

Admittedly, too much free time may carry some drawbacks. Due to lack of self-judgment, students may spend the time on some unhealthy activities such as overtime TV gaming, surfing internet pornographic contents, etc. That why appropriate guide and supervision from parents of teachers are still necessary even during the “free” time.

In conclusion, I have to concede that there might be some possibilities of wrongdoing during the “free” time. However, as the old Chinese proverb says, we cannot give up eating for fear of choking, all we need here is some suitable guide and supervision.
