Wind launches with cheaper phone rates
Globalive started selling its new cellphone service Wednesday with a baseline package that drastically undercuts its competitors.
Wind Mobile's $15 monthly plan offers twice the minutes of Telus Corp.'s discount Koodoo brand and Rogers Wireless Inc., Fido, which have similar plans.
The company is offering four handsets at launch: the BlackBerry Bold 9700 ($450), the HTC Maple ($300), Samsung's Gravity 2 ($150) and the Huawei U7519 ($130). The data stick for Wind's laptop users will be the Huawei E181 ($150).
Wind offers two plans for BlackBerry customers: a $10 a month "social" plan with unlimited text messaging, Facebook and MySpace, and an Internet plan for $35 a month with unlimited data.
As the Star reported Wednesday, it will also offer:
* a $15 a month chat plan with 100 minutes in a "home zone" calling area and 50 outgoing texts
* a $35 talk plan with unlimited minutes and 50 outgoing texts
* a $45 plan with unlimited incoming and outgoing texts and unlimited "home zone" minutes.
