A popular GPS unit sold at Best Buy and Wal-Mart outlets across Canada has been recalled because the battery can overheat and cause a fire hazard.
Over 19,000 Garmin GPS units have been recalled because batteries can overheat and create a fire hazard. (Health Canada)The recall involves the battery in certain Garmin nüvi models 200W, 250W 260W, 7xx and 7xxt.
Garmin says a third party supplier manufactured the Taiwanese-made batteries.
About 19,000 of the GPS units sold in Canada are affected by the recall.
There have been no incidents of fires or overheating in Canada, but nine instances have been reported in the U.S.
Consumers who purchased a Garmin GPS unit should check the model number, and if it's among the affected units, stop using it immediately and contact Garmin at 866-957-1981.
