Thanks for the offer. I am actually in GTA so I can't really do anything in person but I'd be more than happy to help out with things via phone/email.

I don't have my certificate yet and am planning to get it, hence the idea on volunteering, just to see if it's something that I truly want to do.

In terms of long distance education, Conestoga college in Kitchener does offer an online version. But their information line is damn hard to get through. I haven't managed to talk to a real person yet Persistence is the key, I guess.

It really depends on where you plan to teach. I was only thinking of applying to government agencies in Ontario so I must be certified by TESL Ontario.

If you go to TESL Ontario's website (www.teslontario.net), under accreditation, you will see the requirements as well as a list of schools to get the certificate.

In terms of language proficiency requirement, all you need is to have a bachelor degree from either a Canada university or equivalent with English being the language of instructions. And depending on the school you choose to attend, there may be additional requirements such as grammar tests, personality interviews etc.

I am just curious. Why would you like to volunteer as a TESL teacher? This is not your long-term goal, is it? I guess you probably just want to find a job of being a TESL teacher. As far as the research I've done, the chance of getting a full-time job working as a TESL teacher is really slim.

I am just curious. Why would you like to volunteer as a TESL teacher? This is not your long-term goal, is it? I guess you probably just want to find a job of being a TESL teacher. As far as the research I've done, the chance of getting a full-time job working as a TESL teacher is really slim.

As I mentioned in my other post, I want to volunteer to see if becoming a TESL instructor is something that I truly want to do. I am only thinking of becoming a supply instructor picking up a few hours on the weekends and evenings since I have a full time job already. This is really to develop an interest and potentially a second career.

In terms of placement, I do believe some of the schools guarantee a placement within 6 months of getting the certificate. But since this is only a side thing for me, I don't have the financial pressure and hence it's not a concern for me.

I am also curious which area are you working in.

I am not quite sure what you meant by area. Do you mean geographical location or profession?

Also in terms of being mean, I think it's a matter of perspective. You can choose to laugh it off, or be offended, all in one's mind. But I do agree, life itself is already too stressful, we should have fun whenever we can, and hence my sarcastic reply
