The provincial government issued a fire ban Monday for all forested provincial lands as three wildfires continued to burn out of control in northern Alberta near the hamlets of Grassland and Lodgepole, as well as northwest of Bonnyville. The ban was issued Monday evening and is in effect for forested areas from Waterton Lakes National Park to north of Manning and the Fort McMurray area. The ban is in effect until further notice.
The ban prohibits people from lighting outdoor fires, fireworks or campfires, even if a fire permit was issued.
“It is very important that everyone take precautions to avoid starting fires it is so dry and windy in many places that fires can start and spread very quickly,” Diana McQueen, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development, said in a news release.
The Grassland fire, burning northeast of Edmonton, grew to 1,000 hectares Monday. It ignited Sunday afternoon, destroying one home and two shops, and prompting the evacuation of at least 15 rural homes, County Reeve David Yurdiga said. Heavy equipment was used to build a fire guard on the north flank.
The Bonnyville fire, northeast of Edmonton, whipped through 650 hectares by Sunday evening. Bulldozers and firefighters built a fireguard on the south side of that blaze and continued Monday to reinforce it to contain the fire.
The Pembina fire near Lodgepole, southwest of Edmonton, is about 360 hectares.
Earlier Monday, McQueen posted a Facebook message about the fires.
“Once again, we are reminded of the devastating impact of wildfires on Alberta’s communities,” McQueen wrote. “Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected, and we are thankful for the hard work of those currently fighting these wildfires.”
Whitney Exton, a wildfire information officer with Alberta Sustainable Resource Development, said investigators are still determining the causes of the fires. Only one of the 57 wildfires this year was sparked by lightning.
“We’re not in the lightning season,” Exton said. “And because of that, it’s likely that those fires are caused by humans, and that means they’re 100 per cent preventable.”
Late Sunday, Boyle RCMP reopened Highway 63 from the Highway 55 junction north to Wandering River because smoke from the Grassland fire has dissipated, though officials warned the road could close again if flames or smoke create problems.
Across the province, dry, grass and warm conditions raised the threat of fire to extreme levels one year after a massive blaze that forced thousands of Slave Lake residents to flee and destroyed one-third of the northern Alberta town.
No rain is forecast until Thursday.
The fire burning near Grassland, a hamlet of about 94 people, appears to have been sparked by a quad using an area trail, Athabasca County Reeve David Yurdiga.
“I think people should avoid any trails in the bush where there’s the potential for fire,” Yurdiga said. “We’ve got to be cautious.”
