Large Item Pickup Program
How does the program work?
Single-family homes are permitted to place up to 4 large items (i.e. furniture, appliances) at curbside for collection. Residents can place all 4 large items at their curbside at one time or spread out the pick of their items over the course of the calendar year
up to a maximum of 4 large items per year. Residents can place out the items at any time during the year as per the following combinations:
- Place out all 4 large items at once at any time throughout the year. Note: if you place out all large items at once you will not be permitted to place any additional large items at curbside until the following calendar year; OR
- Place out 1 large item at a time (at 4 different times of the year) maximum of 4 separate pick-ups per calendar year; OR
- Any combination of pick-ups not exceeding 4 large items per calendar year.
Residents that do not place out up to 4 large items in any given year cannot "carry forward" their unused quota into the following year. All residents will simply "start from scratch" at 4 large items/year beginning January 1st of each year.
We are pleased to announce that Surrey will be collecting mattresses for recycling commencing June 6, 2011.
Mattress Collection Challenges
On January 1, 2011, Metro Vancouver placed a disposal ban on mattresses as they are operationally difficult to handle and recyclable when properly disassembled. Mattresses disposed of as garbage cannot be compacted-consuming a large amount of landfill space. In addition, the springs within the mattresses often become tangled in equipment causing costly repairs. Customers that bring mattresses to regional transfer stations for disposal as garbage are charged $20/unit and are limited to only four (4) mattresses per load.
Surrey's Response...Recycle It!
While Surrey had consequently stopped collecting mattresses via the Large Item Pickup Program as a result of the Metro Vancouver imposed disposal ban, the City has developed a process to recycle old unwanted mattresses.
The City of Surrey will accept mattresses and box springs via the Large Item Pickup Program at no additional cost to residents. The collected ,mattresses will be delivered to a mattress recycling facility where they will be segregated into different materials and shipped to remanufacturing facilities to be processed into new reusable products.
To arrange a collection of your mattresses follow the below steps.
