By the time Canada celebrates its 150th birthday in 2017, British Columbia will have the largest proportion of visible minorities of any province in the country, according to a new study by Statistics Canada.

B.C. is poised to undergo a radical demographic change over the coming 12 years as the number of Chinese, Koreans, Arabs and blacks skyrockets across the province. By 2017, one in three people living in B.C. will be a member of a visible minority, Statistics Canada said in a study of population projections released Tuesday.

In Greater Vancouver, the cultural shift by 2017 will be even more dramatic than that across the rest of the province, as the majority of people in the region -- 53 per cent -- are projected to be members of visible minorities, up from 36 per cent at the time of the last national census in 2001.

。。。。。。

In its broadest projection, Statistics Canada forecasts that the number of people from visible minorities in Greater Vancouver will more than double to 1.5 million people by 2017 from 740,700 people at the time of the 2001 census. Across the entire province, the total number of members of visible minorities is expected to double, to 1.7 million people in 2017 compared to 852,700 people in the last census.

The largest visible minority group in B.C. is projected to remain Chinese, followed by South Asians and Filipinos. In 2017, Statistics Canada forecasts, 767,200 Chinese will living in B.C., accounting for 45.1 per cent of all members of visible minorities in the province
