IESO Plans Routine Voltage Reduction Test
TORONTO, July 14 /CNW/ - The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) is planning a routine voltage reduction test for tomorrow, Thursday, July 15, 2010. The IESO performs voltage reduction tests every 18 months to simulate emergency actions and measure the load reduction that occurs.
The IESO is working closely with transmitters and local distribution companies to prepare for the voltage reduction test, which will consist of two separate exercises. A three per cent reduction in voltage will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. EST, while a five per cent reduction will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. EST.
"We have many ways of balancing electricity supply and demand," said Ken Kozlik, Chief Operating Officer of the IESO. "When times are tight, a voltage reduction can reduce the demand for electricity and give us important flexibility that could allow us to avoid interruptions to end-use consumers. We are required to test it from time to time to confirm how much relief could be available in an emergency."
