回复: 是否放弃中国的发展机会?
这是信的内容:
Dear Ms Molenaar:
Thanks for taking your time from busy work to read my letter. I am Robert, a student of your school. As a new immigrant, I’m very thankful for what the school has offered. You guys give us such a wonderful opportunity for learning knowledge, skills, study experience and for a chance to understand Canadian social culture as well, I would never be too much to show my gratitude.
However, nothing is perfect. In the last quad, we met such a incompent teacher that I feel I have to report to you.
My class No. was ELSE01.33, and Isabella Wai taught us for the quad. The first thing strake me as odd was her accent. Elizabeth speaks English with very strong Chinese accent. “In the first couple weeks, I can not understand any words.” The Arber girl who sits beside the backdoor complained. Since I come from China, I understand her without any problem. Then after 2 months learning, my colleagues comment that my Chinese accent is heavier than before. You know, it is very well for a foreign teacher to teach science, mathematic or something like that, but she is teaching English! How can a teacher who always mispronounces words foster good English speaking students?
The first week, Ms. Wai gave us a test on grammar. She let us point out what sort of grammar mistakes are present in the sentences. We did not have to correct them, just needed to write out what sort of mistake it is, such as: fragment, comma splice, run on sentences, dangling modifiers, and so on. Some students were fully sure how to correct the incorrect sentence, but pointed out that the error in the names proved to be a difficulty. At that time, we thought the first week was not very helpful, but who knew, compared with the coming week, the first several lessons are wonderful.
In her class, Ms. Wai is very easy to lose her temper. She always yelled to us, “CLASS, CLASS”. There were no classes in which she didn’t yell. I once counted, in 2 hours class she shouted at us more than 20 times. Every time, the reason was same, she complained that our classroom was too noisy. We all know we met a teacher who likes the death-like quiet more than anything else. Moreover, sometime even the class was really quiet, she still yelled and clapped, just to conceal that she forgot something. Ms. Wai also makes mistakes when marking her quizzes, she gave one person’s mark to another one, and that frequently happens, but she has never apologized.
Though Ms Wai tried to be a tyrant, but has a weak management indeed. In the ending of final examination, she ordered students to queue for handing the sheets. The waiting time was so long and discipline was actually slack, that some students got adequate time to look through the dictionary, found out the question’s answer. For instance, the meaning of “hallucinatory” was solved in this way.
After watching the movie Romeo and Juliet, Ms. Wai spent 3 classes to watch another movie “Shakespeare in love”. The movie involves very little about what we were learning--Romeo and Julie. Indeed it is quite a controversy film. Facing the erotic scenes, Muslim students, such as Ammniel and Ahmed, felt so embarrassment, they crouched in the last row, and lowered their head under table. Ms. Wai paid no attention to this at all. What is more, any effort to communicate will in vain. She did ever ask us “any questions?” But when we really raised hand and asked question, she invariably blame us “You don’t understand, because you did not listen, so no question! No question!” Awet (an African student) often suffered frustrations about that, he said: “She said a lot, but didn’t answer my question!” I also tried to make conversation with her; I got her replied “I don’t understand.” “I don’t know what are you talking about!” Not once, at least twice. Maybe indeed my English is not good enough to be understood, but we all have been taught since elementary school to respond with phrases such as, “I beg your pardon”, “ would you please repeat your last words?” or simply say “ I’m sorry?” She didn’t know any courtesy, only said: “I don’t understand.” and turned her back on me.
In the final examination, we were instructed to write an essay about Shakespeare’s different figure in his life, it was my turn to feel uncomfortable. As a devoted Christian, I was instructed to compare Shakespeare with God, and to imagine God's complaining to Shakespeare that “I created a lot and lost myself”. I don’t like to question my lord in this way, and I don’t believe that any comparison can be made between God and a playwright. Since we were not given the option to write about a different subject,I took strong offense to this. Thus I sincerely hope, if it is possible, to re-test me and let another teacher evaluate my English level.
I had a duty to speak out what we know about Isabella Wai, if I don’t, maybe there will be more students waste their valuable time in her class.
Thank for you read my letter. May our school have a splendid future!
Best wishes! And may the almighty God bless you!
Your sincerely: Robert Qi
