Research of LGBT Students: An At-risk Student Population
................ Under the law, schools have legal and ethical obligations to provide equal protection for all students. However, for many lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered (LGBT) students, schools are unsafe and survival, not education, is the priority. Five to six percent of American students are LGBT students, a conservative estimate means there are 2.25 to 2.7 million school-age LGBT youth (Human Rights Watch, 2001). Since the schools play a critical role in child and adolescent socialization and development, it is the primary center for learning, growing, and building a foundation for their lives later on. Unfortunately, the school can become a primary site of conflict, victimization, and activism for LGBT students. Every day all across this country, many LGBT students face harassment and discrimination in public school settings, which poses a critical threat to their well-being. ........................................
According to the National Youth Association , nine out of ten LGBT students have experienced harassment at school. LGBT teens are bullied two to three times as much as straight teens. More than one third of LGBT kids have attempted suicide; they are four times as more likely to attempt suicide than their straight peers.............
Although the suffering of LGBT students at school has become a growing concern to parents, school administrators and communities, most legal aspects of the problem have not changed significantly over the years. Law enforcement used to keep busy dealing with what they believed to be “serious” criminals. They are less likely to seek the juvenile offenders. Meanwhile, the purpose of juvenile court is to correct and rehabilitate, so that juvenile offenders usually get less aggravated charges with little compensation to the young victims . ..........................
The students who implement the bullying and discrimination towards LGBT peers usually grow up in families or communities surrounded and influenced by negative societal and cultural values towards LGBT individuals. This is mainly due to the American society strictly delineated roles for male and female genders. Conformity is emphasized and highly valued, in families, communities, and schools. It cannot be changed in short amount of time............................The increasing awareness of LGBT students’ suffering has sparked a huge public attention across the United States. Massachusetts passed a historic gay civil rights law in 1993, which led a precedent to collect state-funding for LGBT education programs in school. Meanwhile, “two private boarding schools in Massachusetts, Phillips Academy and Concord Academy, served as the birthing ground for the concept of high school gay-straight alliance clubs”.............................Under the Obama Administration, six Federal agencies cooperate to establish the Federal Partners in Bullying Prevention Steering Committee, whose function is to provide guidance on combating bullying to individuals and organizations. In order to help school administrations fight against bullying in schools, The Department of Education has issued guidance to clarify under what conditions school bullying might violate Federal education antidiscrimination laws. The Obama administration also provides legal guidelines to reaffirm the rights of students to form GSA and other student groups under the Equal Access Act........................... School social workers can persuade administrations to add more factual reading materials about sexual orientation to school’s curricula or libraries. They can play a critical role for helping and supporting the development of GSA or LGBT support groups. They can provide training for school staff to improve rates of intervention and increase the number of supportive teachers and other staff available to LGBT students............................................Meanwhile, school social workers can also help LGBT students navigate through the coming out process. For example, they can explain to confused LGBT students how and when sexual orientation develops. Being LGBT is not a choice. They can help them to forecast and understand what might be lost if they come out to family and friends. On the other hand, school social workers need to help families understand how rejecting behaviors significantly increase their LGBT children’s negative health outcomes. These outcomes include: attempted suicide, serious depression, illegal drugs and unprotected sexual intercourse..................
