Toyota/Lexus/Scion and HONDA/Acura are famous for their No. 1 quality and reliability. Yes, No.1 in quality and reliability among auto brands in North America.
Gas Economy is not the determinative element in the formation of their good reputation. If you go to US, you will see even more Toyota/Lexus, Honda/Acura, Infiniti (Nissan's luxury line).
I don't blindly trust Jap cars. For example, Mistubishi is crap car in America. Nissan and Mazda are just average, compared to their American competitors. Instead, I only refer to good brands. Coincidentally and unfortunately, two Jap brands stand out. I am not paranoid in patriotism, even though I hate Japs from the bottom of my heart.
European car - VW, Audi, Volvo, to be honest, is not a good choice for many of us, not only because of their relatively high price. Actually the maintenance fee and less reliability is pretty a concern. They win more scores on body/interior design and fancy stuff/technology.

Go to resort for the opinions from local people, mechanics and many your Chinese folks who came before you.
Don't easily buy anti-Jap car articles concocted by some of our extreme patriots, otherwise you will take risk of losing money and time even confidence.
Malibu (Chevrolet) is a good reliable American family car as far as I know. Lincoln and Cadilac are also good if you can afford their dear prices. Any more good US cars?
