Under general direction, you will be responsible for maintaining the gardens, grounds and horticulture program within the National Historic Site. The Gardener is primarily responsible for a variety of horticulture duties at a senior trades person level, including tasks which require specialized training in the horticulture trade, including greenhouse operation, nurseries and arboriculture. You will also deliver general gardening and grounds services as part of the gardens and service team within the National Historic Site and botanical gardens, while promoting the customer service, environment and professional front-door image presented by the University.

You must be capable of periods of high intensity physical work, and have an ability to work flexible hours as needed to meet the needs of the clients. The incumbent is required to lift, carry and place heavy loads as a routine requirement of the position. You will be required to operate and carry out minor repairs to a wide variety of motorized and task-specific machinery, both on and off site which requires extreme diligence when operating on public highways.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Knowledge of maintaining a historic landscape and historic landscape records and research
Knowledge of names and cultural requirements of plants found in a botanical garden
Performs a wide range of skilled horticulture tasks; designs and plans gardens, turf maintenance, irrigation systems, plants, prunes, waters, propagates and fertilizes plants and gardens
Controls weeds and pests, observes plant health care and follows an integrated pest management program for a variety of exotic and indigenous plant species
Maintains a thorough and current knowledge of the methods and techniques, used in the horticulture and nursery trades. Uses a variety of materials, tools and equipment, designed for the trades
Maintains records including but not limited to: greenhouse operation, propagation programs, plant identification, the botanical collection and safety. Records and provides information for the University’s web site
Oversees the work performed by labourers and students undertaking a horticulture practicum at the University and notifies their instructor of any areas of concern
Maintains habitat requirements of native species and manages the potential impacts of introduced and invasive species on the gardens and grounds
Performs a wide variety of skilled and basic manual tasks for the gardens and grounds service unit
Reads and interprets site plans, blueprints and working drawings
Provides educational tours and garden lectures to the public
Participates in the development and implementation of policies and procedures regarding chemical safety and storage, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS) and workplace safety issues related to the gardens and grounds services
Operates as an integral part of the University team and performs special projects and other duties of a similar nature and complexity related to gardens and grounds services or otherwise assigned
Functions as part of the University team and supports other team members; maintains good communications within the team; participates in democratic decision making; exhibits appropriate behavior that is sensitive to the effect on others of personal actions, language and habits; and takes personal responsibility and maintains a professional approach to working relationships and conflict resolution.

Required Qualifications/Skills/Abilities:
Grade 12 graduation from a secondary school or equivalent
Possession of a valid B.C. Pesticide Applicator License
Possession of a valid Class 5 driver’s license in the Province of B.C.
Five (5) years experience in the field of horticulture or arborculture, supplemented by a formal technical horticulture or arborculture training program of at least two (2) years
Possession of a Trade Qualification Certificate or Certificate of Apprenticeship in Horticulture, or Possession of a Diploma in Horticulture, or a combination of at least 10 years related work experience and training
Ability to communicate effectively verbally, in writing and by email
Ability to work in all types of weather conditions
Ability to operate equipment related to the duties

Preferred Qualifications:
Good working knowledge of irrigation systems
Knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and the use of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
Heritage landscape or botanical garden experience ability to provide interpretive services and continued education
Basic First Aid.

This position is regular full-time working 37.5 hours per week. The successful candidates must have the ability to work a variety of shifts including weekends. This is a CUPE Local 3886 Bargaining Unit position and the hourly rate is $22.90 and the university is pleased to offer a comprehensive benefits package.

Under general direction you will perform a wide variety of maintenance duties such as daily operation and repairs, maintenance and preventative maintenance of all building equipment and systems including but not restricted to steam boilers, hot water boilers, a/c units, potable water systems, compressed air and air handling systems.

You will be responsible for quality work in a timely manner and ensuring that all duties are carried out in a safe and efficient manner and in accordance with all statutory codes and regulations and any operational systems established by the department from time to time.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities
Performs routine activities in the daily operation and maintenance of building systems utilizing safe operating methods and in compliance with building codes, departmental guidelines and legislated standards.
Repairs, maintains and carries out preventative maintenance on all the physical plants systems and components ensuring the efficient and safe operation of the buildings.
Operates the computerized control systems for fire alarm, environmental, mechanical and electrical operational systems.
Responds to both Preventative Maintenance and Unscheduled Work Orders in the time frame scheduled and is responsible to fill them out and hand them in
Completes associated water testing and test procedures and completes all required logs and other documentation accurately and on a timely basis.
Performs all tasks related to Building Operator such as work generated from Preventative Maintenance system, Tenant Service system, and Unscheduled Maintenance system.
Ensures the University is in compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety legislation, guidelines, standards, policies, procedures and practices.
Checks all phases of the operation for difficulties or irregularities. Troubleshoots mechanical and operations problems and perform mechanical maintenance repairs where required.
Carry out day to day maintenance and repairs to the facilities, fixtures and furnishings, building systems, equipment and responds to work orders and work requests on the campus on a daily basis
Regularly cleans, and paints the mechanical rooms as required.
Responds to and complete all learners, staff and faculty’s maintenance requests and work orders in a timely fashion.
Responds to emergency calls in accordance with University policies to provide operational repair services as assigned.
Monitors the environmental and protection systems for buildings.
Assists other members of the department on a daily basis to carry out duties required within the P&ER Department.
Participates in democratic decision making; exhibiting appropriate ‘office/workplace’ behavior that is sensitive to the effect on others of personal actions, language and habits; and takes personal responsibility for maintaining a professional approach to working relationships and conflict resolution.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience
Minimal 4th Class Power Engineer Certificate
Grade 12 plus ten (10) years recent experience performing duties related to the position, including one (1) year in a similar role utilizing shop and hand tools, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Knowledge of WHMIS and H&S Policy and procedures
Possession of a valid Class 5 driver’s license in the province of BC.
Basic Safety, Equipment Maintenance, Presenting Technical Information,

Skills and Abilities
Ability to communicate effectively verbally, in writing and by email
Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
