CALGARY — Several Alberta companies, who face substantial shortages of power engineers, have come together to support a new industry-driven program that will train power engineers in only 37 weeks.[/FONT]

The project launched Monday by the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society’s Oil & Gas Training Programs. The fast-track Power Engineering Training Program initiative will be offered in Calgary through funding from the federal and provincial government, in partnership with SAIT Polytechnic and Enform, with the support of employers and the Power Engineering occupational accreditation authority, the Alberta Boilers Safety Association (ABSA).[/FONT]

“The once imminent shortage of power engineers in Alberta is already upon us, and has reached a critical stage. Employers are advising us that they will need to hire hundreds of power engineers in the next several years,” said Bob Khan, OGTP Director of Operations. “With the support of government and industry, we developed this program to take in hand the labour market demand for power engineers.[/FONT]

“We are significantly shortening the length of time it usually takes to train power engineers, by utilizing the technical background of internationally-trained immigrants and new Canadians who are struggling to find sustainable employment. In only nine months of intensive, customized and focused fast-track training, we will complement, re-tool and certify these talented individuals’ skills set, so they can become high-yield contributors to Alberta’s economy as power engineers.”[/FONT]

The organization said that hundreds of candidates applied for the program. Several major employers participated in the candidate final selection interviews process, where a pool of 40 were shortlisted and the top 16 applicants were chosen to start the program. The class of 16 includes people from all over the world, including the Philippines, Poland, Ukraine, Pakistan, Cameroon, Mexico, China, Nigeria, India and Ecuador.[/FONT]

The organization said this project will enable these new Canadians and immigrants with international experience and demonstrated competence, who were previously unemployed or marginally employed below their optimal potential, to enter the workforce as power engineers.[/FONT]

“Cenovus is working with several educators to increase the number of certified power engineers in Alberta to meet the tremendous need in the oilsands. Power engineering careers are high quality, high value and long term roles that are essential to plant operations and Cenovus’s long term goals,” said Stewart Adams, manager of operations training at Cenovus Energy.[/FONT]

我知道这个项目，去年12月份开始报名的。这个只是给个4级证。一共8个月时间，其中3个月实习。费用都由省政府出，还有funding。不过，就业也没有保障。

女省长给我们拜年送红包

[FONT=宋体]温哥华春节联欢晚会今年是第十一届了，今年我是第一次参加。和上千名华人共聚一堂，一起品美味佳肴，观精彩表演，感受新春佳节气氛，心情格外舒畅。[/FONT]
[FONT=宋体]会后精彩的文艺节目和美食都没让我留下太深的印象，但至今萦系脑海的，依然还是省长简惠芝那张灿烂的笑脸。[/FONT]
BC[FONT=宋体]省省长简惠芝亲自率领众议员团队前来参加华人春晚，在台上给大家集体团拜后，又在节目进行期间，带领属下穿梭于各个餐桌间，近距离给每位普通观众拜年。如同婚礼上的新郎新娘点烟环节，各桌人都翘首企盼省长快来到自己的桌前。电视主播出身的漂亮的女省长，身着亮丽的唐装，像新娘一样把喜庆带给了大家。[/FONT]

女省长给我们拜年送红包

[FONT=宋体]这位长相甜美、非常有亲和力的女省长，带着灿烂迷人的微笑，在向每位观众说“新年快乐”的同时，双手将印有“恭喜发财”的红包送上（红包里是一块巧克力糖）。[/FONT]

[FONT=宋体]此时台上的歌舞虽然热闹非凡，但整场晚会的亮点绝对聚集在女省长的身上，她走到哪里，哪里就掀起一片热浪，留下一片欢笑声。现场共设有一百个餐桌，她走过了一半还多，尤其是有老人或孩子的桌前，她都优先走过去，主动邀大家合影。我也幸运地得到了省长亲手派发的红包，并兴致勃勃地与省长一道合影。（[/FONT][FONT=宋体]也正是这位女省长，在上任伊始，就承诺在每年二月份增加一天节假日，其实就是迎合了中国的春节。今年是第一年实行，我们过节就可以多休一天了。）[/FONT]

[FONT=宋体]在她的身边左右，没有保安开道护身，没有记者围追堵截，周围挤满了热情相邀的普通市民。作为一省之长，即便这是政客的作秀，这“秀”也作得非常得体、大受欢迎、深得人心。[/FONT]

[FONT=宋体]想想她的“冷漠”似乎也可以理解，在这自由的国家里，有种种持不同政见的华人，谁能保证其中没有个别分子会利用合影去做政治文章呢？政治挂帅之下，为了不捅漏子，领袖人物只能高高挂起，与民众合影的事就显得多此一举而避之不及了。更别提给群众送红包了，按照国内的惯例，红包要送也是下级给上级送，领导给群众送红包那是不符合国情的。[/FONT]

CCIS帮助新移民的项目挺不错的,至少不用学费书本费,还会帮你联系实习单位,省钱省力. 没想到现在也开POWER ENGINEER的班了,可惜知道的太晚了..

老赶，

上次看到你的文章提到考级进度问题，说2级一定要等有了很多经验再去考，我很是同意你的观点，今天我想就我的个人情况，和你探讨一下，希望你能给点意见。

我认为考级，你上次说的级别和经验匹配的问题，我觉得这是一个很重要的方面。另外一个方面，也就是我的问题，over-qualified的问题，这里我解释一下：就是你也知道，在1级的厂里干，2级就是shift engineer，如果是电厂等大厂子，一般shift engineer底下还有几个assistant了，也就是说要管几个人了，翻夜班的话，可能就负责全厂的运行了。因为语言和人际关系，我不太愿意担任这个角色，所以我一直在犹豫是不是要考二级，我现在已经考了一门，我考得目的是为了去那些2nd class gas fired manufacture, 因为那里如果24小时倒班的话，每班可能只放一人，那人就一定需要2级证书。我现在的顾虑是，其实安省的市场，3级工作和2级工作机会差不多的，2级很多都是supervisor的工作，是我不太喜欢的。我就在想，考出2级来了，如果再去应聘三级工作，会不会有over qualified的问题。去应聘2级不当supervisor的工作，其实工作机会可能还没原来三级多，所以一直在纠结。现在的工作，工资还可以，就是太累，年纪大了，拼不过老外了，也是我想换的原因。所以想听听你的意见，考还是不考？其实也听身边一些同事说过over qualified的问题，有些同事考出更高一级的证书而放弃的也有。

笑容都是一个模样，那也是功夫呢，我刚刚有体会。前两天参加三联市的春晚，晚会结束后，我作为嘉宾被邀请上台与演员合影，站在那儿把面部表情调整到“茄子”的状态，等着台下众多摄像照相机的拍照，只一会儿功夫，就觉得脸上肌肉有些木了，极其不自然。咱没练过这功夫呀。有照片为证。而省长作秀的场面就太多了，所以就练出百笑一面来了。

至于和名人合影的市民，也就是为了事后和朋友聊天时多个谈资罢了，谁让名人大家都认识呢。
