The "demand" for PE's and trades is mostly hype from what I can see. The demand is mostly for cheap workers in undersirable work locations. Yes there are the desirable good jobs, but they are few and far between. Big corporations want to hire as few people as possible for as little as possible to make maximum profits. The best way to reduce wages is to flood the market, decreasing demand in the process. Schools want to increase profits, so they'll tell you what you want to hear when it comes to job prospects (similar to law schools). If you want to be good as an engineer, get a few years of industrial experience first so you'll have a clue and understand what real work is. Trust me, people who do have extensive industrial experience and do know whats going on can spot you a mile away. Going to school for two years doesn't teach you anything. Until you have experience working in a live refinery or coal fired power plant, you have no value as a "skilled worker." And once you get experience, it takes a good 10 years until you are no longer "green". This is when you become valuable. Of course if you are buddies with the right people or your dad has worked for the company for 20 years, that's the only guaranteed way to get hired for a competitive position.
