China to open consulate in Montreal, expand business ties
New office expected to open before July
By LYNN MOORE, The Gazette January 22, 2011
The People's Republic of China is to open a consulate in Montreal with a view to expanding commercial ties between China and Quebec.
Zhang Junsai, China's recently appointed ambassador to Canada, made the announcement this week in Montreal.
The new office is expected to open before July, but no date has been set.
More than 2,000 Quebec companies have business dealings with China, while about 600 of them export to the country on a regular basis, said Travis Joern, manager of the Montreal office of Canada China Business Council.
His recently established Montreal office is seeking to promote Quebec's high-tech sectors, including aerospace and environment technologies.
Quebec companies in the consumer goods sector also see growth potential in China, where the middle class is expanding, he said.
About 100 Quebec companies have already incorporated in China and estimates are that 30 to 50 companies have manufacturing operations there.
Quebec-based Bombardier is among the highest profile Canadian companies operating in China, he noted.
And key among Chinese investments in Canadian companies in recent years is the $240 million U.S. investment in Consolidated Thompson Iron Mines Ltd. by Wuhan Iron and Steel Group, which has an interest in the company's Bloom Lake project in Quebec.
